Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 8, 2026

This policy explains what information Nita Media and Publishing, LLC (“Nita Media,” “we,” “us”) collects, and what we do with it. It covers this website and the software we distribute directly from it — today, the Lumina app for macOS.

The short version: we do not have accounts, we do not run analytics or advertising, and Lumina keeps your settings on your own Mac.

What this policy does not cover

Much of our catalog is sold through other companies' stores, and when you buy there, that store — not Nita Media — runs the transaction and holds your account and payment details under its own privacy policy:

  • Our books are sold through Amazon. Amazon's Privacy Notice and Conditions of Use govern your purchase, your Amazon account, and any reading data from Kindle. You can find both in the Help section of the Amazon site you bought from.
  • Any mobile apps we publish will be sold through the Apple App Store and Google Play, governed by the Apple Privacy Policy and the Google Privacy Policy respectively.

From those stores we receive sales and download reporting only — never your payment details, and never a way to identify you personally. If you have a question about data held by one of those stores, take it up with them directly; we have no access to it.

The Lumina app

What stays on your Mac

Your screensaver choice, per-screensaver settings, overlay arrangement, temperature unit, and weather location preference are stored locally on your Mac — in the app's preferences and in ~/Library/Application Support/Lumina. We never receive them. If you buy an Update Pass, your license key is kept in your Mac's Keychain and the entitlement it grants alongside those settings; see Purchases and licenses below.

Location and weather

If you enable the weather overlay, Lumina needs a location to fetch conditions for. You choose how:

  • Automatically — Lumina asks macOS for your approximate location using CoreLocation. macOS will prompt you for permission, and you can decline or revoke it at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. Apple's geocoder is used to turn that position into a place name for display.
  • By city — you type a city name instead, and no location permission is requested at all. The name you type is sent to Open-Meteo's geocoding service to look up its coordinates; nothing else about your Mac goes with it.

Either way, Lumina sends the resulting coordinates to Open-Meteo, a free weather service, to request current conditions. No account, API key, or identifier is involved, and we do not receive a copy of the request. Open-Meteo's handling of that request is governed by its own terms and privacy policy. The result is cached on your Mac so the screensaver can display it.

The screensaver itself makes that same request when the Lumina app isn't running, so the conditions on your screen stay current. It sends the same thing the app does — coordinates only — and it does not ask at all unless the weather overlay is one you can display.

Software updates

Lumina checks once a day for new versions using Sparkle, which requests an update feed from luminaupdates.nitamedia.com. That request necessarily reveals your IP address and the version of Lumina you are running, as any download does. We use it to serve the file; we do not build profiles from it, and no identifier of you or your Mac is sent with it. Nothing is downloaded or installed without your approval — Lumina tells you an update is ready and waits.

Purchases and licenses

Lumina is free to use, and the free screensavers and overlays stay free. The optional Update Pass unlocks the paid ones. Because Lumina is distributed directly rather than through an app store, the purchase runs through Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record: your payment details go to them and never to us. What comes back to us is a license key and its status.

When you activate the pass on a Mac, Lumina sends three things to our license service at license.nitamedia.com:

  • the license key you entered;
  • a name for the Mac, so you can tell your activations apart — the computer name from your Sharing settings, not your name;
  • a one-way hash of the Mac's hardware identifier.

That last one exists so a pass can be tied to the Mac it was bought for and so the activation limit means something. It is salted and hashed, so it cannot be turned back into the identifier it came from; it is not linked to you, your name, or your email address, and it is never used for analytics or advertising. The service is run by us, so unlike the payment itself these do reach us; as with any web request it also sees your IP address, which we use to serve the response and nothing else. We keep request logs for two weeks so we can investigate problems, and then they are deleted.

After activation, Lumina re-checks the pass periodically to pick up renewals. It works fully offline. A check that fails — no connection, a captive portal, our service being down — never removes anything; Lumina simply carries on with what you already have. Your license key is stored in your Mac's Keychain and the resulting entitlement in ~/Library/Application Support/Lumina.

You can remove the pass from a Mac at any time in Lumina's settings, which frees the activation for another machine and takes the paid content off that one. If you request a refund, the license key is deactivated and the paid content locks again — the free portion of Lumina keeps working either way, and we never disable the app itself.

What Lumina does not do

  • No accounts, sign-in, or user profiles.
  • No analytics, telemetry, tracking, or advertising SDKs.
  • No reading of your files, screen contents, calendar, or contacts.
  • No selling or sharing of personal information.

This website

nitamedia.com is a static site served over a content delivery network. We do not set tracking cookies and we do not run analytics.

If you use the contact form, the name, email address, and message you submit are sent to us by email so we can reply. We keep that correspondence only as long as needed to handle your enquiry.

The contact form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA v3 to block automated abuse. Google receives information about your interaction with the page for that purpose, subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. The site also loads fonts from Google Fonts, which involves a request to Google's servers.

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and operational purposes.

Children

Our website and apps are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, or to object to its processing. Because we hold so little — in most cases nothing more than an email you chose to send us — such a request is usually straightforward. Contact us and we will respond.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the website or the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.
